A SUBSTANTIAL INTERNSHIP

Substantial Media is a platform that strikes a balance between inspiration and information, traditional and digital. Through photography, journalism, radio, podcasts, public television, and social media we amplify the positive stories within black and brown communities.

We also look to bring awareness to important issues affecting our communities on a local, state, and national level and serve as a training ground for the next generation of multicultural leaders and communication professionals.

A Substantial internship is just that—one of considerable importance size, and worth. Through this internship, students will be strongly developed and made ready for the workforce ahead.

A Substantial Internship will help students gain valuable experience in the mass communications and digital technology field, as well as allow them to gain insight and exposure to the world of entrepreneurship.

The career readiness of college graduates, especially those of color has been an important issue in higher education and in the labor market. Substantial Media, LLC through its number of local, state, and nationally recognized partnerships seeks to equip highly talented and motivated minority student leaders with opportunities to sharpen their soft and hard skills.

We will focus on leadership and personal development, career readiness, and professional development, along with community development, research, and service.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines career readiness as “the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace.”

Competencies we focus on include:
• Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
• Oral/Written Communications
• Teamwork/Collaboration
• Digital Technology
• Leadership
• Professionalism/Work Ethic
• Career Management
• Global/Intercultural Fluency

Substantial wants our students to be ready and we know that it will take a commitment from those inside and outside of the classroom to get them there. Our students leave our program feeling “of considerable importance, size, and worth, strongly built and made” for the journey ahead.
